The “Beau Zone Layer” – Sawahime Yamahai Junmai
The “Beau Zone Layer” – Sawahime Yamahai Junmai
From Tochigi Prefecture. SMV: -1 Acidity: NA
The label on this very expressive Yamahai is pretty damn cool. It’s eye catching! But better than that is a sake that is palate catching, and this brew is worth a serious look. Some sakes feel great. Some sake taste great. But rare is the day that a sake drinks and feels great at the same time. In my review of this flavorful brew I called it an F&F sake, not because it “Failed” but rather because it is a great “feeling” and “flavor” sake that will sit you up and take notice. Hmmmmmm? But isn't sake with a Nihonshu-do -1 too sweet? No way! This Yamahai is more rich and velvety than sweet, but there is a cool creaminess to it with a hint of Rice Krispy Treat. And this brew is one heck of a warming sake. Look for buttery and nougat flavors that come forth with some warming. If you have never tried a “Yamahai” style sake then this is a great first step, and if you are well versed in this old brewing technique that you will find great hidden treasures in this sake that drinks even better than it looks!
